The New York Giants and running back Devin Singletary have finalized a contract restructuring, a league source confirmed to Newsday on Friday. The adjustment comes as part of the team’s efforts to manage salary cap space ahead of the upcoming season.
Details of the Contract Adjustment and Team Context
Originally scheduled to earn $6.5 million in the final year of his three-year deal signed in 2024, Singletary’s pay has been reduced while additional incentives were introduced. If the Giants had released Singletary, they would have freed up $5.3 million in cap space, following the recent release of linebacker Bobby Okereke. Instead, Singletary remains on the roster under the new terms.
During the previous season, Singletary rushed for 437 yards and scored five touchdowns, ranking second on the team in both categories. He also made 18 receptions totaling 151 yards and contributed 313 yards on 12 kick returns. This versatility adds value as the Giants aim to maintain depth among their running backs.
Running Back Group and Coaching Strategy
The Giants plan to keep their three-back rotation intact, with Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Cam Skattebo expected to share lead responsibilities. Skattebo, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 8, is anticipated to be healthy by the start of the offseason program scheduled for April 6. Head coach John Harbaugh, known for prioritizing the running game during his time with the Ravens, appears to favor maintaining strong depth at this position.
Though the Giants reportedly showed interest in Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III—who will become a free agent next week after the Seahawks declined to use their franchise tag—it seems unlikely the team will carry four running backs. The restructured contract for Singletary may also facilitate a potential trade if the Giants explore other options.
Implications for the Giants’ Roster and Free Agency Moves
With Singletary remaining part of the Giants’ plans and the cap space improved by his restructured deal, the team enters free agency with increased financial flexibility. This adjustment provides the Giants with greater maneuverability as they evaluate roster moves moving forward.
