On Friday, the San Francisco 49ers finalized a four-year contract extension worth $17 million with kicker Eddy Pineiro, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal guarantees Pineiro $10 million, securing his role with the team for the foreseeable future.
Pineiro’s Career Path Before Joining the 49ers
At 30 years old, Eddy Pineiro’s journey to this extension has been anything but straightforward. After going undrafted out of Florida in 2018, he signed with the Raiders but spent the entire rookie season on injured reserve due to a groin injury. The Raiders traded him to the Chicago Bears, where Pineiro won the kicking competition, only to miss the 2020 season with another groin injury.
In 2021, Pineiro signed a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts but was released before the season began. He then joined Washington’s taxi squad but was let go in September following an injury settlement. By December, Pineiro was signed by the New York Jets, who later re-signed him as a restricted free agent before releasing him prior to the following season. He spent the next three years with the Carolina Panthers before the 49ers picked him up in September of last year.
Strong Performance Leads to Contract Extension
During the 2025 season, Pineiro appeared in 14 games for the 49ers and delivered one of his best performances to date, successfully converting 28 of 29 field goal attempts, a 96.6% success rate, alongside making 34 of 38 extra points at 89.5%. This consistency in crucial moments played a significant role in the team’s decision to offer the long-term extension.
What This Means for the 49ers Moving Forward
The 49ers’ commitment to Pineiro indicates their confidence in his abilities as a reliable kicker, a position often important for close games and postseason runs. With a guaranteed $10 million, the team has secured stability in their special teams unit, which should help them maintain competitive momentum in upcoming NFL seasons.
