Steelers Land WR Michael Pittman Jr. in Surprise Trade Deal

The Pittsburgh Steelers strengthened their wide receiver lineup on Monday by trading for veteran Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a late-round pick in this year’s NFL draft. The 28-year-old receiver is expected to provide much-needed depth alongside the team’s top wideout, DK Metcalf.

A source familiar with the arrangement, speaking to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity since the trade was not yet official, confirmed the Colts have agreed to send Pittman to Pittsburgh.

Pittman’s Proven NFL Performance

Since joining the NFL as a second-round pick in 2020, Michael Pittman Jr. has emerged as one of the league’s consistent performers. Over six seasons with Indianapolis, he has totaled 485 receptions, 5,254 receiving yards, and 25 touchdowns. In 2025 alone, Pittman delivered 80 catches for 784 yards and scored seven touchdowns, underscoring his reliability as a receiver.

Pittman himself appeared to hint at the trade on social media, sharing that his wife recently dreamed of him wearing a Steelers jersey.

“God works in crazy ways,” Pittman posted.

Steelers’ Need for a Complement to DK Metcalf

The Steelers have been actively looking for a secondary target to support DK Metcalf after a disappointing 2025 season. Metcalf, who was often tightly covered by defenses, ended the year with 59 receptions for a career-low 850 yards. His season was further marred by a suspension for the final two regular-season games following an incident involving contact with a fan during a game in Detroit.

Pittsburgh is aiming to revitalize its offense in 2026 under new head coach Mike McCarthy, who was hired in late January to succeed Mike Tomlin. With Pittman joining the ranks, the team now boasts two tall, experienced wide receivers who can pose significant challenges for opposing defenses.

Quarterback Situation and Offensive Outlook

The Steelers are still evaluating their quarterback position heading into the new season. Aaron Rodgers remains a possibility for a return, despite his hesitance to commit to a 22nd NFL season. The potential reunion with McCarthy, Rodgers’ former coach in Green Bay, remains an open discussion.

Regardless of who quarterbacking the offense, the addition of Pittman provides a proven playmaker alongside DK Metcalf. Last season, aside from Metcalf, Pittsburgh’s receiving corps struggled to contribute consistently, with running backs and tight ends dominating the team’s leading receiver statistics. Calvin Austin III, for example, had just 31 receptions, ranking sixth on the team.

Looking Ahead: What This Trade Means for the Steelers

The acquisition of Michael Pittman Jr. could significantly impact Pittsburgh’s offensive strategy, offering quarterback options a reliable and versatile target. This move suggests the Steelers are committed to enhancing their aerial attack and addressing weaknesses from last season. With a revamped receiving group and new leadership under Mike McCarthy, Pittsburgh aims to become a more dynamic contender in the 2026 NFL season.
