Lions Sign Isiah Pacheco, Replacing David Montgomery Powerfully

The Detroit Lions have made a major move in free agency by signing former Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco, replacing David Montgomery who was traded to Houston earlier this offseason. This decision comes amid several key roster changes in Detroit as the team looks to bolster its running game heading into the 2026 NFL season.

Building a Dynamic Backfield Duo with Pacheco and Gibbs

Pacheco joins Jahmyr Gibbs to form a backfield combination aimed at replicating the Lions’ traditional power running style. Although Pacheco experienced a less productive season in 2025, averaging 462 rushing yards and one touchdown over 13 games, Detroit sees his physical rushing ability as ideal for their offensive identity. The team expects Gibbs to remain the primary ball carrier, while Pacheco will serve as a power runner in short-yardage situations and when head coach Campbell wants to emphasize a punishing ground attack.

Offensive Line Upgrades Support Power-Running Philosophy

Detroit has focused heavily on reinforcing its offensive line this offseason to complement its running game strategies. The Lions signed former Panthers center Cade Mays to a three-year, $25 million deal, while backup tackle Larry Borom and interior lineman Juice Scruggs were also added, the latter acquired via the Montgomery trade. Despite these improvements, the left tackle spot remains a concern, with the Lions yet to determine whether they will address it through free agency, the draft, or a trade.

What This Signing Means for Detroit’s Playing Style

The addition of Pacheco signals the Lions’ commitment to returning to a hard-nosed, physical running approach. Even though the offensive line is no longer as dominant as it was in past seasons, Detroit believes that Pacheco’s ability to gain yards after contact makes him the right fit. This signing reflects the team’s intention to emphasize toughness and consistent ground gains as core elements of their offense moving forward.
