Jaguars Release Johnny Mundt After One Season Run

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced the release of tight end Johnny Mundt on Monday, as reported by NFL insider Tom Pelissero. Mundt’s departure comes after a single season with the team, marking another change to the Jaguars’ roster as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season.

Mundt’s Career Journey and Recent Performance

Johnny Mundt, 31, originally entered the NFL as an undrafted player out of Oregon in 2017. After being waived following the preseason without securing a permanent spot, Mundt signed a futures contract with the Los Angeles Rams in 2018. Over the next few seasons, he earned a place on the Rams’ 53-man roster consistently and signed back-to-back one-year contracts with the team.

In the 2022 offseason, Mundt signed a two-year, $2.4 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings as an unrestricted free agent and later renewed for another year in 2024. He joined Jacksonville last offseason on a two-year deal, participating in every game during the 2024 season. Throughout 17 games, Mundt recorded 19 receptions for a total of 142 yards and scored two touchdowns.

What the Move Means for Mundt and the Jaguars

Releasing Johnny Mundt signals the Jaguars’ intent to reshape their tight end roster as they evaluate options for the future. Mundt, with his experience spanning Los Angeles, Minnesota, and Jacksonville, now enters free agency, where he will look for a new opportunity to continue his NFL career. This move also reflects the Jaguars’ ongoing strategy to fine-tune their lineup ahead of the next season’s challenges.
