In response to persistent struggles against the run in the 2025 season, the New York Jets have signed veteran defensive tackle David Onyemata. The move aims to reinforce the defensive front, addressing the team’s vulnerability to opposing ground attacks. Onyemata’s addition brings experience and proven run-stopping ability to Gang Green’s defensive line.
Experienced Run-Stopper to Join Rebuilt Defensive Front
David Onyemata, formerly with the Atlanta Falcons, will combine forces with newly revamped defensive teammates T’Vondre Sweat, DeMario Davis, Joseph Ossai, and Kingsley Enagbare. Head coach Aaron Glenn’s defense struggled on the ground last year, and adding Onyemata is a strategic step to prevent opponents from dominating the line of scrimmage.
With a decade of NFL experience and 154 games played—115 of which he started—Onyemata is a recognized force against the run. In the previous season, he ranked eighth among defensive tackles in run stops, accumulating 28 stops and earning a run stop grade of 78.2, based on players with at least 200 run defense snaps. His tenure and consistent production make him a key addition to New York’s defensive plans.
Contract Details and Team Impact
Onyemata agreed to a one-year contract worth $10.5 million, with $9.6 million guaranteed, reflecting the Jets’ commitment to enhancing their defensive line this offseason. This acquisition is expected to provide a significant boost in run defense, adding depth and toughness to the middle of the defensive front. It positions the Jets to better challenge opposing offenses in the upcoming NFL season.
