Detroit Lions Secure Malcolm Rodriguez with New Deal

The Detroit Lions have decided to keep linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, signing him to a one-year extension. This move makes Rodriguez the fourth player from Detroit’s 2022 draft class to earn a new contract, reinforcing the team’s commitment to their recent draft picks.

Continuing Commitment to 2022 Draft Class Standouts

Alongside Rodriguez, fellow 2022 draftees Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams, and Kerby Joseph have also received contract extensions. Hutchinson secured a notable four-year, $180 million agreement extending through 2025, while Williams agreed to a three-year deal valued at up to $83 million. Joseph became the highest-paid safety in the NFL last year with a four-year, $86 million extension. Overall, eight players drafted since Brad Holmes assumed the general manager role in 2021 have earned contract renewals, highlighting Detroit’s focus on building long-term talent.

Rodriguez’s Role and Performance with the Lions

Selected in the sixth round of the 2022 draft from Oklahoma State, Rodriguez quickly proved himself despite initial concerns about his size by starting 15 games in his rookie season. The arrival of first-round pick Jack Campbell in 2023, coupled with Derrick Barnes’ play, led Rodriguez to a more rotational role that year. Rodriguez stepped up in 2024 when Barnes suffered a season-ending injury in Week 3 but then faced a torn ACL on Thanksgiving, sidelining him for the start of the 2025 season.

Career Highlights and Statistical Contributions

Rodriguez has appeared in 50 games for Detroit, starting half of them, and has amassed 163 total tackles, three sacks, and two fumble recoveries. A memorable moment came during the 2023 NFC Championship game, when he intercepted a pass in the Lions’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers. His versatility and steady play provide depth to the Lions’ linebacker group.

Current Linebacker Landscape and Team Adjustments

Detroit’s linebacker unit now centers around Jack Campbell, who recently had an All-Pro season marked by a career-high 178 tackles, five sacks, and multiple forced fumbles. The team is preparing to fill the gap left by veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone, who signed a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Defensive losses also include cornerback Amik Robertson and defensive tackle Roy Lopez, both moving to new teams.

Offseason Moves and Future Outlook

In addition to retaining Rodriguez, the Lions have added center Cade Mays, offensive tackle Larry Borom, and running back Isiah Pacheco during the current free agency period. Jack Campbell remains a key figure for the future, potentially staying with Detroit through the 2027 season if the team exercises his fifth-year option, keeping stability in the linebacker corps.
