Sidney Crosby Skates: Olympic Gold Game Status Uncertain

In Milan, Sidney Crosby took to the ice Saturday morning with Team Canada, yet his availability for Sunday’s Olympic gold medal hockey game against Team USA remains unresolved. Head coach Jon Cooper indicated no final decision had been made regarding Crosby’s status for the pivotal matchup, emphasizing the need to protect both the player and the team’s chances.

Coach’s Update on Crosby’s Condition and Team Strategy

Team Canada held a closed practice session, preventing journalists from observing Crosby’s performance or his line mates. Cooper admitted he had not yet spoken directly with Crosby but planned to assess the situation in a meeting later that evening.

“I haven’t spoken to him yet,”

Cooper said.

“We’re gonna meet tonight and have a determination of what’s gonna happen tomorrow. He won’t put himself in harm’s way and he’s not gonna put the team in harm’s way. Obviously, we’d love to have him. That determination will be made tonight.”

Cooper also clarified that Crosby would not suit up merely in a limited role or as a symbolic presence, as was the case with Victor Hedman for Sweden in their quarterfinal game.

“It’s too important,” Cooper explained,

“We don’t want to have somebody in there as an inspiration when we could have a player that could be capable of helping. You never know if guys are gonna get hurt in the game. He wouldn’t want to do that either.”

Other Roster Developments: Josh Morrissey’s Absence

Coach Cooper confirmed that defenseman Josh Morrissey will be sidelined due to an upper-body injury sustained early in the tournament. Although Morrissey had resumed full practice before Canada’s final preliminary game against France, he ultimately was deemed unable to perform at his best.

“Josh, in the end, he just wouldn’t be able to perform at what he could,”

Cooper stated. “We made the decision.”

When asked if Morrissey had suffered any setback, Cooper declined to comment further but made it clear the choice was made with the team’s best interest in mind.

Coaching Decisions Ahead of Gold Medal Clash

Regarding whether Crosby might serve behind the bench as a de facto assistant coach during the game, Cooper was uncertain about the rules but confirmed this arrangement will not occur. The focus remains on assembling the strongest possible lineup without compromising player health or team needs.

Implications for Team Canada and Upcoming Match

With Sidney Crosby’s participation hanging in the balance and Josh Morrissey ruled out, Canada faces an uncertain path in their gold medal showdown with the United States. Crosby’s potential absence would create a significant gap in Canada’s offensive and leadership capabilities, increasing the stakes for all involved players. The final decision, expected imminently, could heavily influence the outcome of the match and the country’s pursuit of Olympic hockey gold.
