Goalie Connor Hellebuyck has been granted the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his leadership in securing the U.S. men’s hockey team’s gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The announcement came from President Donald Trump during his State of the Union address on February 25 in Washington, D.C., where he highlighted Hellebuyck’s outstanding performance.
Details of Hellebuyck’s Historic Olympic Performance
During the gold medal game in Milan, Italy, Hellebuyck made an impressive 41 saves against Canada, helping the United States clinch a 2-1 victory. Across the entire tournament, he posted a save percentage of 95.62%, the highest at the Olympics, and was named the best goaltender of the event. Over six games, he faced 137 shots, conceding just six goals.
President Trump Praises Hellebuyck and Team USA
Speaking in the presence of Hellebuyck and his teammates at the State of the Union, President Trump remarked on the goalie’s exceptional skills.
“They weren’t about to say no because I’ve never seen a goaltender play as well as goalie Connor Hellebuyck,”
he said.
Trump added that he consulted the entire team before selecting Hellebuyck for the award.
“Great athletes have gotten that, very great, the best,”
he continued.
“I thought he deserved it. I did take a vote — every single one of them. I said, ‘I’m not giving it if anybody goes ‘no,’ and every single one of them rapidly put up their hand. So, I want to thank you all. What a special job you did. What special champions you are.”
Other Award Recipients and Women’s Team Response
Other notable Team USA athletes who have previously been honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom include gymnast Simone Biles, former soccer star Megan Rapinoe, and basketball legend Michael Jordan. President Trump also mentioned the success of the U.S. women’s hockey team, which also defeated Canada to win gold at the same Olympics.

He stated that the women’s team would
“soon be coming to the White House.”
However, a spokesperson for USA Hockey confirmed the women’s team declined the State of the Union invitation due to academic and professional obligations.
Controversy Following President’s Remarks to Women’s Team
The reluctance to attend followed a controversial comment President Trump made during a video call with the men’s hockey team.
“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that,”
he said.
“If I didn’t do that, I do believe I probably would be impeached.”
Several members of the women’s team later showed their displeasure by liking social media posts critical of the President’s remark, reflecting tension within Team USA in the wake of the statement.
Impact of the Medal Award and Olympic Victory
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the United States, underscoring the significance of Connor Hellebuyck’s role in Team USA’s rare gold medal achievement—the first men’s hockey Olympic gold in 46 years. The recognition highlights the broader success of American athletes at the 2026 Winter Olympics and brings attention to the ongoing dynamics within the national teams. Moving forward, the spotlight on both the men’s and women’s hockey squads is likely to continue, especially as discussions around team support and public appearances unfold.
