Auston Matthews has rejoined the Toronto Maple Leafs after leading Team USA to an Olympic gold medal in Milan on Sunday. Following celebrations overseas and a night out in Miami, Matthews and most of the U.S. men’s hockey team visited the White House in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, accepting an invitation from President Donald Trump. Matthews spoke about why the team chose to attend the White House event despite the political climate.
Reasons Behind the American Team’s White House Visit
Matthews explained that the team views the White House invitation as an honor, regardless of who occupies the presidency. He emphasized that the players take pride in representing the United States and referenced the historic achievement, as it was the first gold medal for the men’s ice hockey team in 46 years.
To me, I don’t like to get political or get into that stuff. Like I said, we’re proud Americans and winning a gold medal, it’s been 46 years since the men’s ice hockey team has done that, so I mean, the team that wins the Stanley Cup each year accepts the White House invitation to go,
Matthews said.
So I think it’s something that you do because we are proud Americans and whatever your political beliefs may be, hopefully something like this will hopefully bring more unity to the country and stuff like that. But for us, we believe it’s a great honour, no matter who’s in office.

Highlights from the Gold Medal Victory and White House Interaction
Immediately after their 2-1 overtime win against Canada, the American team received a phone call from President Trump in their locker room. FBI Director Kash Patel was present celebrating with the players during the call. In a humorous moment captured in video, Trump joked about needing to invite the women’s team to the White House as well or else face impeachment.
Matthews called the joke unfortunate and expressed strong support for the women’s team, highlighting that both men’s and women’s U.S. hockey teams brought home Olympic gold medals.
We love the women’s team, we support them. The night we won the gold medal, we were hanging out in the dining hall until 3, 4 in the morning. So it’s unfortunate that occurred. We have nothing but love and respect for the women’s team and what they were able to accomplish, and it’s amazing that the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams are both bringing home gold medals for the United States of America.
I think that should be talked about more than the other. But we’re extremely proud of them and happy for them and we support them 100 per cent.
Maple Leafs Prepare for Upcoming Game Amid Team Adjustments
With the Olympic break over, Matthews is set to play in a road game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday evening. His teammate John Tavares will return after missing practice due to flu symptoms, according to Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube. Meanwhile, Easton Cowan, Dakota Joshua, and Philippe Myers have been listed as scratches for the game.
The Lightning will be missing head coach Jon Cooper, who is away due to the recent death of his father. Forward Brayden Point, sidelined for the Olympics because of injury, is expected to rejoin the Lightning lineup.
Significance of Matthews’ Comments and Team’s Post-Olympic Outlook
Matthews’ explanation for attending the White House reflects a desire to separate politics from national pride and the honor associated with winning gold. His remarks also aim to promote unity and respect for all athletes representing the country. As Matthews resumes play with the Maple Leafs, the team faces the challenge of climbing back into playoff contention, underscoring the importance of maintaining focus after a historic Olympic achievement.
