Jonathan Drouin, Ryan Pulock Doubtful for Islanders vs Ducks Game

As the New York Islanders begin the first game of their four-game road trip in Irvine, California, uncertainty surrounds the availability of forwards Jonathan Drouin and defenseman Ryan Pulock. Drouin missed the Islanders’ recent victory over the Florida Panthers due to a lower-body injury but participated in Tuesday’s practice, while Pulock did not skate due to what was described as a maintenance day by the team.

Despite Pulock briefly leaving the Panthers game with a potential shoulder issue and then returning, Islanders coach Patrick Roy expressed uncertainty about his presence in Wednesday night’s matchup against the Anaheim Ducks.

“We’ll see tomorrow,” Roy remarked regarding Pulock’s status.

Defensive Adjustments Made Ahead of Ducks Game

With Pulock sidelined during practice, Scott Mayfield skated next to Matthew Schaefer, filling Pulock’s typical role on the blue line. Meanwhile, Adam Boqvist joined Carson Soucy on the third defensive pairing, signaling potential changes to the Islanders’ defensive lineup for the upcoming game.

Drouin’s Participation Offers Hope but with Reservations

Jonathan Drouin fully took part in practice, staying with the extra skaters while Anthony Duclair, who was absent from the prior game, skated with the second line. Given Drouin’s recent scoring drought since mid-November, his ice time has been a subject of speculation, but coach Roy suggested that if Drouin is fit to play, he likely will do so.

“It’s a long year, we’re gonna need everybody,”

Roy said.

“And you know, what’s the beauty of our team right now is everybody’s playing well. So that’s a beautiful luxury to have.”

Drouin himself remained cautious but optimistic about his condition following practice.

“Hopefully I feel good tomorrow. Felt pretty good today,”

he noted.

“Couldn’t really walk the last couple days.”

He declined to comment on whether watching the game from the press box gave him a mental reset.

“Same game when I play or watch from above,”

Drouin said.

“Been in the league for 12 years.”

Second Line Performance Highlights Concerns

During the prior game against the Panthers, the second line featuring Anthony Duclair alongside Cal Ritchie and Emil Heineman struggled to produce offensive impact. Statistical analysis from Natural Stat Trick showed this line lagged behind the Islanders’ other units in shots and expected goals.

Coach Roy, however, praised Duclair’s contributions despite the line’s overall struggles.

“I thought [Duclair] was fine. He did a lot of good things,”

Roy said.

“Had a breakaway. Him and Ritchie had a pretty good game. No complaints. I liked the way he played, the way he competes. That’s it.”

Goalie Assignments and Opponent Outlook

For Wednesday’s game in Anaheim, David Rittich is slated to start in goal, with Ilya Sorokin scheduled for the following night’s game in Los Angeles as part of a back-to-back. The Ducks enter the contest on a five-game winning streak and defeated the Islanders in both meetings last season.

Implications for Islanders’ Upcoming Road Challenges

The Islanders face critical decisions with key players’ health hanging in the balance as they navigate this road trip. The availability of Jonathan Drouin and Ryan Pulock will likely influence coach Roy’s lineup strategies and could affect the team’s ability to maintain momentum against a surging Anaheim squad. With Drouin’s Islanders status still uncertain but leaning toward participation and Pulock’s situation unresolved, the team’s resilience will be tested in the opening game against the Ducks.
