PFL Welterweight Title: Kuramagomedov Wins and Retires Shockingly

The Professional Fighters League launched its 2026 season with a major event on Saturday at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, UAE, featuring two championship bouts. At the center of attention was the PFL Welterweight Title fight between Ramazan Kuramagomedov and Shamil Musaev. The vacant belt was on the line as these two undefeated Russian fighters clashed. Kuramagomedov, formerly the final Bellator MMA welterweight champion, was battling Musaev, the winner of the PFL’s 2024 welterweight tournament who had been absent from competition throughout 2025.

Both fighters entered the night unbeaten, ensuring a high-stakes confrontation that would decide the new champion in front of an enthusiastic crowd in Dubai.

Intense Early Exchanges and Tactical Ground Battles

The action began quickly as Kuramagomedov landed the first meaningful strike, a right hand within the first minute, which transitioned into grappling along the cage. During this exchange, Musaev was pressed against the fence and absorbed hammer fists and thigh knees while attempting defense. Although Kuramagomedov controlled the clinch, he struggled to secure the fight to the mat. Musaev managed to fend off the attack, firing back with knees, one of which landed illegally low, forcing a brief pause. After confirming he could proceed, Kuramagomedov resumed pressing Musaev with leg kicks and cage control.

Round two brought a close contest early on, but Kuramagomedov surged late by executing a powerful takedown just over a minute before the bell. Musaev quickly returned to his feet, leading to intense fence grappling. The referee issued a warning for holding the fence, and Musaev showed visible damage—a cut appeared on his forehead from a knee strike.

The Decisive Grappling and Fight Control Develops in Later Rounds

Musaev sought to press aggressively to start the third round but was soon forced to retreat. After a near-miss punch, Kuramagomedov secured another takedown against the cage. Musaev maintained guard, but Kuramagomedov dominated position, landing damaging elbows while Musaev attempted to escape. Eventually, Musaev gave his back, allowing Kuramagomedov to apply two choke attempts equipped with a locked body triangle. Though the first choke was incomplete, the second was tighter; nonetheless, Musaev endured and reversed the position near the round’s end, briefly taking the dominant spot, but time proved insufficient to significantly alter the fight’s momentum.

Kuramagomedov continued to control the fight in the fourth round. Musaev escaped several takedown attempts but showed limited offensive output. Early in the frame, Kuramagomedov landed punches and pushed Musaev into the fence. Despite surviving, Musaev was driven by Kuramagomedov’s pressure. Near the round’s close, Musaev gained a promising opportunity while Kuramagomedov was momentarily on his knees, absorbing punches from Musaev. However, an illegal knee thrown by Musaev while Kuramagomedov was down resulted in a one-point deduction by referee Big John McCarthy, negating what might have been Musaev’s strongest round.

Musaev’s Urgent Push and Kuramagomedov’s Endurance Secure the Title

Facing a point deficit from the illegal strike, Musaev aggressively attempted to finish the fight in the fifth round, taking Kuramagomedov down and transitioning to knee-on-belly control. Despite his effort, Musaev could not hold the position, as Kuramagomedov regained footing and forced Musaev back against the fence. The fighters engaged in a dynamic grappling battle with Musaev nearly reversing the position before Kuramagomedov regained control.

With time running out, Musaev needed a finish to claim victory but could not break Kuramagomedov’s defense. Kuramagomedov absorbed a few elbows on a final takedown attempt but survived to the end. When the decision was announced, the judges unanimously awarded Kuramagomedov the victory with scores of 48-46 across the board, crowning him the new PFL welterweight champion and handing Musaev his first professional loss.

Shock Retirement Announcement After Victory

In a surprising turn of events immediately following the fight, Kuramagomedov declared that this bout would be his final one, revealing he had contemplated retirement beforehand. He stated,

“

This fight I think I have 29, almost 30 [fights, including amateur etc]. I think it’s enough.

”

Despite this, he left a slight opening for a potential comeback by adding “maybe.” This unexpected retirement decision caps off a dramatic night in Dubai and leaves the welterweight division in PFL poised for new challenges ahead.
