Ricardo Gonzalez Leads Pro Football Hall Event After Round 1

Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez started strong at the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational on Friday, opening with an eagle to take a one-shot lead after the first round. The competition is being held at The Old Course at Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton, Florida, where Gonzalez posted a 6-under-par 66 amid challenging windy conditions.

Round One Scores and Standings

Following Gonzalez’s impressive performance, Stewart Cink trails by a single stroke, while George McNeill and Australia’s Steve Allan are tied for third place at 4-under. Another Australian, Greg Chalmers, shares fifth place with Ben Crane and Shane Bertsch, each finishing with 3-under 69. Eleven additional players are clustered at 1-under 70, indicating close competition early in the event.

Gonzalez’s Strategy and Performance Details

Gonzalez began his round on the par-5 10th hole, skillfully reaching the green in two shots and sinking the putt for an eagle start. Over the round, he recorded five birdies but faced one bogey on the par-3 eighth hole. The Argentine golfer attributed his success to consistent tee shots and careful navigation of the narrow course and bunkers under windy conditions.

I feel great because I think is my first time starting the top of the leaderboard and so happy to do that,

Gonzalez said, reflecting on his performance.

And especially here on this golf course, very tough in this wind today. I think one of my best day in golf.

He added,

Because this course is narrow, have a lot of bunkers, and I need to keep the ball in the fairway. With this wind, it’s very tough, especially on some holes it’s crosswind, tough to (play). And today I hit a very good tee shot all day, (making it much easier) to make good score.

Stewart Cink Shows Consistency in Second Place

Stewart Cink, a former Open Championship winner, maintained steady play throughout his round, making three birdies on each nine holes and one bogey on the par-4 ninth hole. Cink’s career includes five senior victories, such as the Charles Schwab Cup Championship and the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai earlier this year.

This is my first time playing this course, and every day I’ve played it this week it’s been the same wind, the same wind direction,

Cink noted.

There’s been very little variance. So we’re getting accustomed to playing this course with this kind of wind direction. Now, if it flipped around and blew the (other) direction, it would be a completely different course, but as it is we’re kind of getting the feel for some of these tee shots and some of the approaches.

Mostly our game plan was good and I hit a lot of solid shots, gave myself some birdie looks, made my share. Probably could have made a few more, but it was a day I’m pretty pleased with overall.

Implications and Outlook for the Tournament

Gonzalez’s strong showing sets a competitive tone early in the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational. With experience winning on the PGA Tour Champions circuit in Morocco earlier this year, he appears well-prepared to handle the challenges of the narrow, wind-swept course at Broken Sound Club. Meanwhile, seasoned contenders like Cink remain close in the standings, promising continued tension and strategic play in the rounds to come.
