Ben Silverman Reveals What It’s Like Playing with Brooks Koepka

Ben Silverman received a last-minute opportunity to compete in a prominent group at the Cognizant Classic after Will Zalatoris withdrew due to an ankle injury shortly before his tee time on Thursday. Silverman, a 29-year-old from Dallas, was paired with Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger, replacing Zalatoris and gaining a chance to showcase his skills alongside well-known players.

Early Struggles and Strong Improvements for Silverman and Koepka

Both Silverman and Koepka faced challenges on the first day of the tournament, scoring rounds of 74 and 73, respectively. Despite a slow start, they demonstrated resilience on Friday, with Koepka firing a remarkable 66 and Silverman carding a solid 67. Their improved performances helped them remain competitive as the Cognizant Classic unfolded at PGA National.

Silverman’s Experience Playing 36 Holes with Brooks Koepka

Silverman’s ability to make the cut was notable, especially considering he only learned he would play about an hour before teeing off. Playing alongside a player of Koepka’s caliber appears to have elevated Silverman’s game and confidence. When asked about his experience with the four-time major winner and former LIV golfer, Silverman described it as “awesome.”

“Honestly, I would love to play in a group like that every day, major winners, multiple PGA TOUR winners. It’s a different vibe, different energy amongst the players, amongst the crowd. I like that environment. That’s where I want to be. Thanks to Will, unfortunately, but throwing me in that position was fortunate,”

Silverman shared.

Brooks Koepka’s Perspective on Silverman’s Last-Minute Entry

Koepka recognized the challenges Silverman faced entering the tournament with little notice. Reflecting on the long wait before playing, Koepka commented on Silverman’s early arrival and hours spent waiting around before his tee time. The five-time major champion said,

“A lot of waiting. I think he sat around probably for—probably got here 6:00 a.m. I’m assuming at the latest because I don’t know what the—what’s the first tee time, 6:45, 6:50? So probably earlier than that. Then to hang around until 12:20 something, I think he’ll enjoy his sleep tonight.”

Silverman’s Position and Potential in the Cognizant Classic

Despite the physical and mental demands of a sudden entry and a long wait, Silverman’s strong second-round performance places him in a promising position. With a good rest and another excellent round, he could remain a contender for the title as the Cognizant Classic moves into the weekend.
