Centennial Park Pickleball Courts: Pickleball, now America’s fastest-growing sport for the third consecutive year, continues its rapid expansion. Originating in 1965 on Bainbridge Island near Seattle, this sport blends elements of table tennis, badminton, and tennis.
The Plymouth Park Department is close to completing six new pickleball courts at the Hunter Tennis Complex in Centennial Park.
During the Park Board meeting this month, Superintendent Mike Hite updated members on the progress. The new fencing around the courts is complete, and Brown & Brown General Contractors need to finish the landscaping and install posts for the nets. Hite expects to complete the court painting this week.
The park budgeted $225,000 for construction, funded by donations from local pickleball players, the Blueberry Festival, and $10,000 from the Marshall County Community Foundation. Brown & Brown General Contractors from Wakarusa submitted the lowest bid, at $227,500.
With pickleball’s rising popularity, the addition of these courts underscores the sport’s growing influence in communities across the nation.
