High Winds Challenge Players at CIBC Texas Open 2025 in McKinney, 40 MPH Gusts Disrupt Tournament

High Winds Challenge Players at CIBC Texas Open: High winds disrupted play at the PPA CIBC Texas Open tournament in McKinney, Texas, over the weekend. With gusts reaching 40 mph on Saturday, players struggled to maintain control of their shots. Despite the conditions, the tournament continued outdoors, as moving play indoors would have limited streaming and on-site attendance.

Severe Winds Impact Play

McKinney experienced strong winds throughout the weekend, making it difficult for competitors. Friday’s play saw sustained winds over 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. Saturday was even more extreme, with winds reaching 27 mph and gusts peaking at 40 mph.

The PPA Tour previously had a rule that halted play if sustained winds exceeded 17 mph. However, this has since changed, leaving the decision to the tournament director. Given the circumstances, organizers opted to continue playing outdoors rather than move indoors, where streaming quality and spectator experience would have been affected.

Difficult Choices for Organizers

When extreme wind conditions arise, tournament organizers generally have three options: continue playing outdoors, move play indoors, or cancel events altogether. The PPA chose to proceed outside, prioritizing the competitive experience for players and spectators.

Some matches were particularly impacted, including gender doubles on Saturday, where the wind played a major role in match outcomes.

Balancing Competition and Spectator Experience

Despite the tough conditions, the PPA maintained its schedule to ensure fans could watch the matches. Moving play indoors was considered, but the limited space would have reduced on-site attendance, and the streaming quality would have suffered.

Organizers ultimately determined that playing in the wind was the best solution, ensuring that fans and viewers could still enjoy the tournament.
