Dylan Molloy approached the 2025 Lexus Championship Series uncertain about re-signing with the New York Atlas once his contract ended. Despite receiving a new contract offer from the team, Molloy was dissatisfied with how the previous season unfolded. Although he played in three of the Atlas’s first four wins, contributing six points, he was cut from the roster for the remainder of the season, leaving him unsure if his professional lacrosse career would continue beyond the tournament.
Playing Without Pressure Leads to Breakout Performance at 2025 Tournament
With the prospect of the Championship Series possibly marking the end of his career, Molloy adopted a carefree mindset. This approach resulted in an impressive eight-point game in the tournament opener against the Maryland Whipsnakes. By the end of the 2025 event, he amassed 18 points, ranking tenth overall in scoring. His unexpected success demonstrated that playing free of expectations sometimes unlocks peak performance.
After Champ Series, I didn’t really know my future,
Molloy said.
I think I was in a, if no one reaches out to me, I would potentially see what happened in the summer kind of deal. I was living in the moment. It could have been my last.
At my age in this league, with the track record I have had, which has not been all roses, you don’t really care,
he added.
You’ve got to take every day like it could be your last. Whether it’s injury or contract, you never know. You take it for what it is that day and move along.

From Uncertainty to Leadership with California Redwoods
Following the 2025 Championship Series, Molloy earned a contract with the California Redwoods, where he became the team’s offensive cornerstone. His performance earned him the league’s Comeback Player of the Year honors. After re-signing with the Redwoods this offseason, Molloy enters the 2026 Championship Series with renewed optimism and confidence about his place in the league.
It’s really exciting knowing I’m going to be with the Redwoods this summer, and a lot of these guys have been with the Redwoods last summer and are signed for next summer,
Molloy said.
I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for us to continue building that chemistry given we were all so new last year. I think I’m in a totally different position knowing my future, and the same with most of these players.
Past Experiences Highlight the Championship Series’ Team-Building Impact
Molloy has appeared in the Championship Series three times, beginning with the inaugural event in 2023 as a member of Chrome. That tournament was a memorable experience, blending intense lacrosse competition with camaraderie among teammates during downtime. Chrome won the championship by defeating the New York Atlas, with Molloy securing 23 points for the team.
The victory remains a highlight in league history and added a layer of rivalry during his later tenure with the Atlas.
Those guys all gave me crap and told me I stole 15 grand from them,
Molloy joked, recalling the playful banter from former teammates.
Advantages in Championship Sixes Play Contribute to Molloy’s Success
Molloy credits his effectiveness in the Championship Series to the smaller field size, which allows any player with range to become a scoring threat. His physical style of play also gives him an edge, particularly when matched directly against opposing attackmen. California Redwoods head coach Anthony Kelly affirmed Molloy’s unique positioning in the sixes format, noting that Molloy faces short-stick defensemen after enduring physical play against long poles throughout the summer.
I’m really excited to strategize and give him opportunities,
Kelly said.
He takes a pounding with long poles all summer, and now, he’s going against short sticks. I’m really excited to see what he has the ability to do for us.
Lessons Learned from High-Intensity Sixes Lacrosse
Molloy has gathered insights from his previous Championship Series experiences, highlighting the intense, fast-paced nature of the sixes game. Players must be in peak physical condition to maintain sharp focus during rapid transitions across the field. Despite the perception that stacked rosters make the teams predictable, Molloy points out that actual performance only becomes clear once teams begin playing. This unpredictability requires adaptability and willingness to take on new roles, exemplified by Molloy’s efforts to improve on defense.
Confidence in Redwoods’ Strength and Team Preparedness for 2026
Looking ahead to the 2026 Championship Series, Molloy expresses strong confidence in the California Redwoods’ roster and coaching staff. He highlights key teammates such as Romar Dennis, Andrew McAdorey, and Brian Tevlin as significant offensive threats. The coaching staff’s attention to detail and established team chemistry reinforce his positive outlook for this season’s tournament.
I’m very excited about having Romar [Dennis] on my team,
Molloy said.
I think [Andrew] McAdorey and [Brian] Tevlin will also be huge threats.
Our coaching staff is very invested and thinks through every little X and O, so I feel very confident going into [it] this time,
he added.
Maybe that’s because it’s a homier roster where we’re all familiar and not necessarily competing. We already kind of know everyone’s roles. I feel very confident about this group.
Significance of Molloy’s Journey for the Championship Series and Lacrosse
Dylan Molloy’s transformation from a player uncertain about his professional future to a celebrated leader reflects the competitive and unpredictable nature of the Dylan Molloy Championship Series. His resurgence affirms the tournament’s role in offering players second chances and showcases the increasing intensity and tactical complexity of sixes lacrosse.
