Canada’s captain, Marie-Philip Poulin, may return to the ice for the women’s hockey team’s upcoming quarterfinal match against Germany, but her injury status remains uncertain as of Friday. Head coach Troy Ryan indicated it is too early to be sure whether Poulin will be ready for Saturday’s game.
Details on Poulin’s Injury and Recent Activity
Poulin suffered a lower-body injury after a check from Kristyna Kaltounkova during Canada’s 5-1 win over Czechia. Despite the pain, Poulin shared,
“It did hurt, still hurts, but it’s part of it.”
She added,
“Happy with where I’m at today. Obviously, skated yesterday, skated today. … To get back on the ice with that team is truly special.”
The Beauceville, Que., native missed the following matches, including a 5-0 loss to Team USA and a 5-0 victory over Finland.
Progress in Practice and Outlook from Coach
On Friday, Poulin fully joined practice sessions, skating on a line alongside Daryl Watts and Sarah Fillier. Coach Ryan has expressed hope that Poulin, who is a five-time Olympian, will return during the tournament. Poulin brings extensive experience, having won three Olympic gold medals and one silver, scoring the decisive goals in all three gold-medal wins.
Marie-Philip Poulin was a full participant in Team Canada's practice today, and took some spins on a line with Sarah Fillier and Daryl Watts.
Head coach Troy Ryan said it's still too early to say whether she will play in tomorrow's quarterfinal against Germany.
