Boulder City to Build 4 Pickleball Courts to Meet Growing Demand

Boulder City to Build 4 Pickleball Courts: Boulder City is set to build four new pickleball courts at Veterans Memorial Park, thanks to a $611,520 project approved by the City Council on December 10, 2023. The project will begin in late January 2025 and is part of the city’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for the sport.

Project Details

The project, which includes the construction of courts adjacent to the existing basketball courts, will be funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). A total of $544,085 was allocated for the construction by Las Vegas Paving Corporation, with additional costs for design, surveying, and advertising, bringing the total to $611,520.

City Engineer Jim Keane stated, “Staff is working on processing the contracts and scheduling the pre-construction conference. We anticipate construction will begin in late January 2025.”

The Rise of Pickleball

Pickleball, a sport combining elements of tennis and badminton, has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. The sport, which is easier to play and slower-paced than tennis, has surged in popularity over recent years. The new courts in Boulder City are expected to meet the needs of a rapidly increasing number of players.

A feature on pickleball’s rise in Boulder City will appear in a future edition of the Review.

Pickleball’s Origins and Popularity

Pickleball was created in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, a congressman from Washington, and businessman Bill Bell, who improvised with badminton equipment after a day of golf. The game quickly grew, with rules based on badminton but using ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball. As of 2023, there are more than 70,000 members of USA Pickleball, with over 11,000 locations across the country.

Despite its growing popularity, the sport’s name has been the subject of some debate. While some claim it was named after a dog, Pickles, the official story says it was inspired by the leftover players in a crew race’s “pickle boat.”

Impact on the Community

The new courts in Veterans Memorial Park will provide dedicated space for pickleball players, helping to accommodate the growing demand for the sport. The courts will also support the local community by offering a fun and accessible activity for all ages.

As construction begins later this month, Boulder City residents can look forward to having their own pickleball courts to enjoy. The project is another step in the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance recreational facilities for its residents.
