Pickleball Courts at Scott’s Pointe: Community Pushes for Approval of Major Expansion

Pickleball Courts at Scott’s Pointe: A large crowd attended a Riverhead Town Board meeting to show support for Scott’s Pointe amusement park in Calverton, as it seeks to legalize its newly built pickleball courts along with other attractions like a go-kart track and catering hall. The park’s operator, Island Water Park Corp., aims to secure approval for a 13,000-square-foot pickleball facility as part of a broader expansion effort.

Pickleball Courts Take Center Stage

The proposed pickleball courts have drawn significant attention and support from residents and visitors. The 13,000-square-foot facility will provide a much-needed recreational space for the growing pickleball community on the East End.

Supporters of the plan, especially those who frequent the park, stressed the importance of having more accessible, well-maintained pickleball courts to meet the increasing demand for the sport.

Gabrielle Meehan, a lifeguard from Baiting Hollow, shared her enthusiasm for the expansion.

“Scotts Pointe not only provides a safe and affordable environment for families to spend their days out on the East End, but it also provides a place for potential workers in surrounding towns to find jobs. This includes my friends and I, the lifeguards from Scott’s Pointe.” – (Gabrielle Meehan)

In recent years, pickleball has seen a surge in popularity, especially among older adults. The sport is praised for being low-impact, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a less physically demanding but still engaging activity. Scott’s Pointe’s pickleball courts would provide a dedicated space for this growing community.

“On our behalf, we would like to encourage the community to help fight for Scott’s Pointe’s opening of all new and staying amenities and attractions.” – (Gabrielle Meehan)

Economic and Social Impact

Supporters emphasized the economic and social benefits of the pickleball courts, citing how Scott’s Pointe serves as an affordable and safe place for families. The park offers job opportunities, particularly for local teenagers, and provides a recreational outlet for both residents and visitors.

Sal Ferrari, a local business owner, pointed out that Scott’s Pointe’s success benefits the broader community.

“Rules are not meant to be broken, but they are — and they’re broken because people get their backs [put] to the wall and they don’t have a choice. You have to survive. We are building businesses.” – (Sal Ferrari)

Environmental Concerns

While the pickleball courts remain the focal point of the expansion, there are concerns from environmental advocates regarding the broader development of the site.

The Group for the East End has called for a more thorough environmental review, particularly because the property is close to a groundwater resource.

Despite these concerns, many community members are focused on the positive impact the new pickleball courts will have. Town Board members are currently reviewing whether the environmental impacts are significant enough to require additional assessments.

The Road Ahead

With 78 letters and two petitions supporting the expansion, including the pickleball courts, the Riverhead Town Board will continue its review. The board will also consider public input until January 31.

Eric Scott, the owner of Scott’s Pointe, remains optimistic about the future of the project. He has received overwhelming support for the new amenities, especially the pickleball courts, which many feel will greatly enhance the park’s offerings.
