More than 40 players from Rivertown Pickleball powered by Selkirk competed in the 3rd Annual Throwback at the Boro Pickleball tournament, held February 7-9 at Merchant Centre Court in Owensboro, KY. The event featured over 480 competitors across multiple divisions, showcasing the growing popularity of pickleball in the region.
The indoor tournament, hosted at Merchant Centre Court, included 16 courts and players of various skill levels. Competitors participated in Men’s and Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles, ranging from 2.5 to 5.0 skill levels.
Age-based brackets included an open division and a 50+ category. Many first-time competitors from Rivertown Pickleball, including Rebecca Myhand, Angie Skees, and Kelly Jones, made their tournament debuts.
Strong Performances Across Divisions
Players competed in Men’s and Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles, with skill levels ranging from 2.5 to 5.0. Age-based categories included an open bracket and a 50+ division.
Several first-time tournament participants, including Rebecca Myhand, Angie Skees, and Kelly Jones, made their competitive debuts.
Gold Medal Winners
Kent Cadwell and Sam Dunning secured first place in the 3.5 50+ Men’s Doubles category. Elizabeth Buscher and Cannon Cornelius claimed gold in 3.5 Mixed Doubles, while Shana Geary and Dannette Baker won 2.5 Women’s Doubles.
Silver and Bronze Medalists
Chris Operle and Cheryl Tucker earned silver in the 4.5 50+ Women’s Doubles category. Nathan Carroll and Micah Prude took second in 3.5 Men’s Doubles.
Marty and Vickie Gamble finished as runners-up in 3.0 50+ Mixed Doubles. Angie Skees and Rebecca Myhand, along with Angie Skees and Emily Edwards, claimed silver in 2.5 Women’s Doubles.
In the bronze category, Edwin Moore and H. Norman Meyers placed third in 3.5 50+ Men’s Doubles.
Additional Strong Finishes
Several teams narrowly missed the podium but finished in the top five. Kayle Travis and Pei-Yu Lai placed fourth in 5.0 Women’s Doubles, while Melissa Demes and Lisa Tack finished fourth in 4.0 50+ Women’s Doubles. Dax Myhand and Steve Shidal also secured a fourth-place finish in 4.0 50+ Men’s Doubles.
Rebecca Myhand and Kelly Jones placed fourth in 2.5 Women’s Doubles, while Brent Thompson and Todd Dotson finished fifth in 4.5 50+ Men’s Doubles. Jennifer Wilson and Myra Krenis claimed fifth place in 4.5 Women’s Doubles.
Growing Participation and Future Events
The tournament highlighted the increasing number of local pickleball players competing in regional events. In addition to medal winners, several participants, including Ricky Baker, Jason Bell, Cameron Brown, and others, contributed to the tournament’s competitive atmosphere.
With more players entering the sport and local clubs supporting participation, future tournaments are expected to draw even larger crowds.
