New Pickleball Courts Planned in Streator – Final Site Decision Coming Soon

Pickleball Courts Planned in Streator: The Streator Park District Board has identified three potential locations for new pickleball courts, presenting its recommendations to the Streator City Council on Wednesday. The former Lipton Tea building lot at Wasson and Main streets emerged as the top choice, followed by Oakland Park and Mariner Park.

Site Selection and Priorities

Discussions about adding pickleball courts have been ongoing for months, with multiple locations considered. The board selected these three sites based on factors such as available space, visibility, and accessibility.

The Lipton lot was favored due to its capacity to accommodate four courts, its high visibility, and its proximity to downtown Streator. Oakland Park was recommended for three courts, while Mariner Park could hold two.

Anderson Fields Golf Course was previously a strong candidate but was eliminated due to concerns about potential disruptions to golf activities. Visibility played a crucial role in decision-making, as open spaces make the courts more accessible to new players and help prevent vandalism.

Next Steps and Considerations

City Manager David Plyman attended the meeting to provide guidance on budgeting and planning. He noted that discussions among council members regarding the project have been minimal so far and that no budget has been allocated for the courts.

He advised the board to finalize an ordered list of preferred locations while leaving installation details to the city.

Mayor Tara Bedei stated that the topic will not be on the next city council meeting agenda but will be addressed in the near future. Once the city council makes a decision, planning and funding discussions can move forward.
