New Pickleball Court at Mason District Park: Fairfax County is considering adding a dedicated pickleball court at Mason District Park in Annandale and is asking residents for feedback before making a decision. The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) has opened a 30-day public comment period, ending at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 13.
Proposed Location and Design
The new court would be built next to the existing tennis courts in the southwestern corner of the park at 6621 Columbia Pike. The FCPA selected this location because it meets the county’s recommended 250-foot buffer from residential properties, a measure designed to reduce noise concerns. The project would also include upgrades such as retrofitting the park’s tennis court lights to illuminate the new court, modifying a nearby trail, and relocating utility lines.
Growing Demand for Pickleball Courts
Pickleball has surged in popularity across Fairfax County, leading to increased demand for courts. The county now has 82 pickleball courts, a 293% increase since 2021, according to a county staff presentation. However, new court proposals have sometimes faced pushback from residents worried about noise, traffic, and competition for space.
Last year, the FCPA removed pickleball courts at Kendale Woods Park in Annandale following complaints from homeowners about excessive noise. In contrast, the Mason District Park proposal follows the county’s spacing guidelines, with a larger buffer zone expected to reduce similar concerns.
Community Involvement and Next Steps
Residents can submit their opinions online or mail written comments to the FCPA’s public information office at 12055 Government Center Parkway, Suite 925, Fairfax, VA 22035.
Officials will review public feedback before making a final decision, but no timeline for construction has been set. The proposal is part of ongoing efforts to balance growing interest in pickleball with community concerns about new courts.
