Bartholomew County’s New Pickleball Facility: Construction Underway

Bartholomew County’s New Pickleball Facility: Bartholomew County is gearing up for the long-awaited construction of a state-of-the-art pickleball facility just Dunn Stadium south of Garden City. Following a comprehensive pre-construction meeting, representatives from Case Construction Inc. and the Bartholomew County commissioners have finalized a contract totaling $573,218 to kickstart the ambitious project near Dunn Stadium.

The contract allocates $510,852 towards the construction of twelve illuminated courts, ensuring top-notch playing conditions. An additional $62,366 will cover essential site furnishings such as bleachers, bike racks, and picnic tables, essential for enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Navigating Challenges and Milestones

Consulting engineer Charlie Day of DLZ Indiana has set an ambitious target, with substantial completion expected by October 15th. This milestone marks the stage where the facility will be ready for full utilization, catering to the burgeoning demand for pickleball in the region.

Despite progress, challenges loom on the horizon as construction companies struggle with supply chain issues, exacerbated by potential delays due to above-average rainfall forecasts in south central Indiana, as Day cautioned.

Pre-construction efforts north of the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds have seen exceptional coordination. The project attracted a robust response from contractors, with eight bids received, a testament to the project’s significance within the community. Additionally, prudent management by county highway crews saved $10,000 through efficient preliminary work in excavation and grading.

Embracing Pickleball

Pickleball, an increasingly popular sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has witnessed a surge in participation. Last year’s Discover Columbus Pickleball Tournament at Donner Park drew a record 330 players, showing the sport’s growing appeal locally.

The upcoming Dunn Stadium facility will become the county’s second-largest pickleball venue, trailing only Cera Sports Park and Campground, which boasts 18 courts. Existing facilities include six courts at Donner Park and eight at the Tipton Lakes Athletic Club, with additional provisions made at the new Circle K Fieldhouse, converting basketball courts to accommodate six pickleball courts.

Both the Foundation for Youth and Harrison Lake Country Club have also embraced the pickleball craze, providing dedicated courts to meet the community’s burgeoning interest in this dynamic sport.
