Dane County Pickleball Growth Reflected in New Pickleball Courts, Clubs, and Tournaments

Dane County Pickleball Growth: As pickleball continues to rise in popularity, Wisconsinites seeking to shake off spring fever have plenty of indoor options. Dane County features over 20 facilities with 60 indoor courts, offering lessons, open play, and competitive leagues.

Pickleball’s Rapid Growth in Wisconsin

Pickleball remains the fastest-growing sport in the U.S. for the fourth consecutive year, according to the 2025 Sports & Fitness Industry Association Report. Participation increased 45.8% year-over-year, outpacing sports like soccer and baseball.

Dane County alone now has 110 outdoor courts, a dramatic rise from fewer than 10 courts when the Capital Area Pickleball Association (CAPA) launched in 2016. CAPA now has 1,300+ members and 60 volunteer coaches teaching skill development sessions.

“Exercise that is fun; that is the Holy Grail,” said Kevin McPherson, president of CAPA, on why pickleball has grown so quickly.

McPherson noted that pickleball is no longer just for retirees, with the average player now 35 years old. The sport is easy to learn, provides great exercise, and is affordable and multi-generational.
