High Schoolers Host Pickleball Tournament: Juniors and seniors from Raleigh County high schools came together to host “Hey Y’all It’s Pickleball,” a community tournament aimed at raising funds for a nonprofit. This pickleball event provided a hands-on philanthropic experience for students involved in the Susan Landis Youth Philanthropists (SLYP) program.
Students Lead Fundraising Effort
The tournament, organized by students from Liberty, Woodrow Wilson, Independence, and Shady Spring High Schools, as well as Greater Beckley Christian School, served as a fundraiser to support a local nonprofit of their choice. Past tournaments have also included homeschoolers. Participants paid $20 per person or $40 per team to compete.
SLYP Coordinator Brandon Bennett emphasized the event’s educational value, allowing students to understand the grant process and community involvement.
“These students are the future of Raleigh County. They want to see Raleigh County succeed. They want to see our county become the best county in the United States,” (Brandon Bennett).
A Unique Learning Opportunity
Beyond fundraising, the tournament gave students practical experience in event planning and philanthropy.
“I think that these are motivated students who feel like they can make a difference, and this is a way that they can make a difference, an impact,”.(Brandon Bennett)
He also highlighted the support from mentors and board members of the Beckley Area Foundation, who guided students throughout the process.
Encouraging Community Engagement
The pickleball tournament showcased the enthusiasm of Raleigh County youth in making a positive impact. Their dedication to philanthropy and community service reflects a growing trend of student-led initiatives aimed at local development. With continued support, similar events may expand in the future, further benefiting the community and encouraging youth leadership.
