Indoor Pickleball Courts Coming to MRC: The Planning Board approved plans on March 27 to expand the Midcoast Recreation Center (MRC) by adding a new building dedicated to indoor pickleball courts. The project will also include new outdoor tennis courts and an expanded parking area.
Project Details
The non-profit MRC plans to break ground on the $5.5 million project on April 7. The new 20,900-square-foot building will house eight indoor pickleball courts, providing year-round access to the sport. This expansion will help transform MRC into a regional hub for pickleball tournaments, with a total of 24 possible courts available.
Commitment to Growth
MRC Executive Director Grace Chen emphasized the importance of the expansion. The addition of indoor pickleball courts will increase recreational opportunities for the community.
MRC has already raised $4 million of its $5.5 million goal, thanks to generous contributions from local families and businesses. Construction will take place in phases from now through 2026, with plans in place to minimize disruptions to patrons.
Future Celebrations
A community celebration will be held in late 2025 or early 2026 to mark the completion of the new pickleball facility and interior renovations. This expansion reflects MRC’s commitment to enhancing community access to recreation and ensuring the center thrives for future generations.
