From Pickleball Courts to Cookie Creations: Meet the Couple Spreading Joy Across Communities

Pickleball Passion and Community Impact: Kevin Wietrzykowski and his wife, Marla, are spreading joy in the community in many ways. Kevin shares his passion for pickleball by coaching, while Marla brings smiles through her beautiful, hand-decorated cookies. Together, they are also planning a trip to the Appalachian Trail to assist hikers in need.

A Passion for Pickleball

Kevin’s journey into pickleball began in 2016 when he became captivated by the sport after his wife, Marla, played her first game in 2015. He soon became a certified pickleball instructor after passing a test with the Professional Pickleball Registry.

He now coaches at several courts in the Greater Toledo area, including Waterside, Rotary Park, Keener Park, and Stone Oak. Kevin’s commitment to his students is clear as many players proudly say, “Kevin taught me that” when they make a good play. Kevin and Marla have also earned first-place finishes in state and local pickleball tournaments.

Marla’s Artistic Cookies

Marla is known for her creative, hand-decorated cookies, which she showcases on her Facebook page, Cookies & Cupcakes. Currently, she is focused on Easter-themed sugar cookies shaped like bunnies, carrots, chicks, and more.

These cookies are made through a three-day process that involves baking, frosting, and intricate decorating. Marla credits her mother for inspiring her love of baking and says she isn’t an artist but can replicate designs she finds appealing. She now owns over 300 cookie cutters to fulfill various requests, including pickleball paddle-shaped cookies.

A Shared Mission on the Appalachian Trail

This month, the couple is taking their shared mission beyond the pickleball court and kitchen as they plan a trip to the Appalachian Trail. Kevin hiked the 2,200-mile trail in five months in 2015 and is well aware of the energy needed for such an endeavor.

During their trip, they aim to assist hikers by providing high-calorie foods and snacks. They plan to help 20 to 30 hikers each day, offering them sustenance like doughnuts and other trail-friendly snacks.

Impact of Their Efforts

Kevin and Marla’s commitment to pickleball and helping others illustrates their dedication to spreading happiness in different ways. Their work, whether coaching pickleball or helping hikers, shows the positive impact they have on their community. As they continue their travels and share their talents, they inspire others to get involved and give back.
