Centennial Park Pickleball Eco-Friendly Lighting: A new lighting system at the Centennial Park Pickleball Complex in Champaign, Illinois, has earned national recognition for its eco-friendly design. On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, DarkSky International certified the system as a DarkSky Approved Outdoor Sports Lighting project, making it just the second outdoor sports court in Illinois to receive this honor.
The lighting upgrade was completed in February 2025 and designed by Musco Lighting. It was built to reduce light pollution and keep the glow limited to the court area. The complex is located at 2203 West John Street and is also known as the John Street Courts. It is operated by the Champaign Park District and regularly hosts open play, summer leagues, and the annual Champaign Park District Pickleball Open.
Meeting a Growing Need for Evening Play
Interest in evening pickleball has grown in Champaign County. Many players wanted to continue games after sunset, which created the need for better, more focused lighting. This system allows nighttime play while protecting the environment and nearby areas from glare and excess brightness.
Sarah Sandquist, Executive Director of the Champaign Park District, said the new lights were an instant success. “The courts are often at full capacity with four players per court and others waiting their turn,” said Sarah Sandquist. “Within an hour of the new lights being installed, players shared the news on social media and were playing until after 8:00 p.m. We’re thrilled to provide this amenity in a way that aligns with our sustainability goals.”
More Improvements Coming to the Complex
This lighting project is only the first part of a larger plan. The park district hopes to continue improving the complex over the next few years. Upcoming upgrades include eight more courts, new restrooms, and extra parking.
The pickleball courts are already a popular spot, often filled with players during league games and community tournaments. The addition of eco-friendly lights will allow even more access, especially in the evenings.
Making Pickleball Better and Greener
This project reflects a growing trend in combining recreation with environmental care. By using smart lighting, the park district is improving the player experience without harming the surrounding area. It shows how communities can meet growing demand while also protecting natural resources.
