Junior Pickleball Camp for Kids: Children at St. Luke’s SportsPlex in South Whitehall Township are learning to play pickleball through a summer Junior Pickleball Camp. The camp offers hands-on instruction for all skill levels and introduces kids to the sport’s fast pace and fun environment. Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S., though it’s not commonly played by younger age groups.
Kids Jump Into a Fast-Growing Sport
At the camp, the sound of bouncing balls and excited voices fills the air as kids dive into drills and games. They’re guided by coaches like Dottie Kelly, who help them understand the basics of the sport—especially its unique terms and rules.
“I think getting it, like on serves, getting it not in the kitchen, because sometimes it may look like it’s in this navy blue, but sometimes it’s in the kitchen,” said camper Alex Dorney, explaining how he’s learning the court layout.
Coach Dottie Kelly reminded players about one important rule: “If the dink is outside the non-volley area, kitchen area, it stops you got to start all over.”
Fun Comes First, Learning Follows
Despite the tricky parts of the game, kids are enjoying themselves.
“I like when I serve because sometimes, I mess up but it’s okay,” said Alex Dorney.
“It was just really fun,” added camper Srikar Nidamanuru.
Coach Dottie Kelly said pickleball teaches more than just how to hit a ball. “Whether you’re a basketball, volleyball, tennis, racquetball, any sport you play; baseball, there’s all things that come in play.”
The sport, she said, is also popular with people of all ages. “It’s fun for all ages; whether you’re their age, young, my age, my sixties, or even, I have 80-year-old people who are playing,” said Kelly.
A Game for All Generations
While many of the kids are picking up a paddle for the first time, they are also gaining confidence, coordination, and social skills. Pickleball’s simple rules and welcoming atmosphere make it an easy and exciting game for young players to learn and enjoy.
The Junior Pickleball Camp is helping introduce a new generation to a sport that’s growing quickly across the country. For many of these young campers, it’s a new passion and a fun way to spend their summer.
