New Pickleball Courts at Alley Pond Park Set Excitement

New Pickleball Courts at Alley Pond Park: In a celebratory gathering on Friday, July 19, Alley Pond Park in Oakland Gardens celebrated the grand opening of four new pickleball courts, a $28,000 enhancement aimed at meeting the growing demand for the sport in New York City.

Located at the park’s athletic fields, these courts add to the park’s diverse recreational offerings, which already include tennis and baseball facilities. The unveiling event, attended by NYC Parks Queens Borough Commissioner Jackie Langsam and Queens Council Member Linda Lee, marks a significant addition to the park’s amenities and reflects the city’s commitment to expanding pickleball access across Queens.

A New Addition to Alley Pond Park’s Amenities

Located at the end of the Alley Pond Main path, these courts now complement the existing tennis courts and baseball fields. Alley Pond Park is home to athletic fields, golf courses, hiking trails, and playgrounds, and today we’re adding pickleball to the list of amenities which make this park so special,” said NYC Parks Queens Borough Commissioner Jackie Langsam. She also noted that the popularity of pickleball is rapidly increasing in Queens, and NYC Parks is enthusiastic about accommodating enthusiasts at various courts throughout the borough. By introducing pickleball to the diverse range of activities available at Alley Pond Park, the park aims to provide Queens residents with another opportunity to stay active and enjoy this exciting new sport.

Expanding Pickleball Options Across Queens

This development aligns with NYC Parks’ broader objective of enhancing local greenspaces with exciting new recreational options. Recently, a similarly transformative project was completed at Farm Playground in Fresh Meadows, where an underused handball court was converted into a newly surfaced new pickleball courts.

“Eastern Queens is known for its beautiful parks and green spaces, so I am proud to join NYC Parks in ensuring that our community’s facilities are maintained for all residents,” remarked Queens Council Member Linda Lee. “I know how much the community enjoys tennis and pickleball at our city’s parks, so I look forward to seeing athletes young and old enjoying a state-of-the-art court all summer long. Thank you to NYC Parks and Commissioner [Sue] Donoghue for your partnership.”

Ongoing Developments and Future Plans

The introduction of these new pickleball courts follows the recent completion of the $26 million Alley Pond Environmental Center, which opened in 2023 after nearly two decades of planning and development. In addition, NYC Parks is currently planning a pathway reconstruction project throughout Alley Pond Park to enhance accessibility and further enrich the community’s greenspace.
