Pickleball Courts Approved at Williamsburg: The Williamsburg City Council approval a new project to enhance local pickleball facilities by adding outdoor pickleball courts at the Recreation Center. Spearheaded by Nichole Winegarden director of the Recreation Center, the initiative responds to the growing demand for pickleball in the community. After a rejected proposal due to utility concerns, the new plan places four courts at the north end of the gravel parking lot, offering additional playing space and convenience.
With the community group actively fundraising and pursuing non-profit status, this project aims to provide more access to the sport for residents, especially when the Recreation Center is busy or closed. “So [strength coach] Mitchell [Stahl] and I looked a bit more.” Winegarden explained, reflecting on their search for a viable location.
New Location and Funding Challenges
The chosen site for the new courts is the north end of the gravel parking lot, located west of the Recreation Center and south of the playground. Winegarden reassured that the existing restrooms and ample parking facilities would accommodate the new courts, despite their use of space for about 20-25 vehicles. “There’s still plenty of space there for parking.” she noted, addressing concerns about parking space reduction.
Jodi Stahl, a key member of the community group, mentioned that other potential sites, such as by the outlet mall, were unsuitable. “It didn’t really fit our criteria.” she said, explaining that the mall’s location and lack of community-based land made fundraising difficult. In contrast, the group can raise funds more effectively for city property projects.
Community Efforts and Financial Hurdles
The community group, currently pursuing its 501(c)(3) status, has already received a $600 donation to support this process. Winegarden assured that the new outdoor pickleball courts would complement, not replace, the existing indoor courts, providing additional playing opportunities during peak times or when the Recreation Center is closed. “We’re willing to step up, if you’re willing to give us permission.” Michael Mulligan added, emphasizing the group’s commitment to enhancing local pickleball facilities.
City Manager Aaron Sandersfeld outlined the need for engineering and construction compliance, estimating a cost of around $40,000 for these services. He suggested that the community group could cover this expense through fundraising.
Councilman Tyler Marshall and City Councilman Dale Walter stressed that while the project aligns with community interests, its financial burden must be borne by the fundraising efforts of the group, as the city’s budget cannot accommodate the cost. “I think it’s a good cause and all that.” Walter commented, acknowledging the initiative’s merit but reaffirming the need for community financial support.
News in Brief: Pickleball Courts Approved at Williamsburg
Williamsburg’s City Council has greenlit the installation of four new outdoor pickleball courts at the Recreation Center, following the rejection of a previous site due to underground utilities. The courts will be located at the north end of the gravel parking lot, offering space for around 20-25 vehicles.
The community group, led by Nichole Winegarden and Jodi Stahl, is actively fundraising to cover construction and maintenance costs, including a $40,000 engineering fee. While the Recreation Center will retain its indoor courts, the new facilities aim to increase access, particularly during peak times. The initiative shows community commitment but requires significant local financial support.
