Glencoe Area Pickleball Group Seeks Funds: The Glencoe Area Pickleball (GAP) group is launching a fundraising campaign to build four new pickleball courts as part of the upcoming renovation at Oscar Olson Sunrise Park. The estimated cost for the project is $150,000, with the city of Glencoe committing up to $75,000 of the total.
So far, GAP has raised $38,845, with significant contributions from local organizations such as Snow Pros, VFW/Legion, Glencoe Regional Health, Glencoe Dental, and the Glencoe Fireman’s Relief Association. Additionally, a grant from Knife River will provide $5,000 worth of concrete supplies.
A placard will be installed at the new courts to honor all donors. The funds already secured are sufficient to begin phase one, which involves constructing the concrete pads. The group hopes to complete this phase by the end of the year, with a detailed plan for the next steps anticipated following an upcoming city council meeting.
GAP is also applying for additional grants to cover phase two, which includes surfacing and installing game nets and lines. Although a recent grant application to the Department of Natural Resources was unsuccessful, the group is hopeful about a pending application to the QuickTrip Community Fund.
Currently, local pickleball enthusiasts use modified tennis courts at GSL High School, as well as a portion of a fieldhouse gym during the winter months. The new courts at Oscar Olson Park would provide a dedicated space for the sport during warmer seasons.
The GAP invites community members of all ages to join and learn pickleball. “We are very open to teaching new players,” said Jerry Schimelpfenig, a resident and GAP member. “We have had 10-year-olds and 80-year-olds learn to play.”
The group meets to play at the high school tennis courts on Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesdays from 9-11 a.m.
