Pickleball in Osburn’s Continued Additions: The city of Osburn is making impressive strides in transforming the once-derelict Lions Park. The latest addition is a newly completed multi-sport court, designed to cater to both basketball and pickleball enthusiasts. This enhancement is part of Osburn’s ongoing efforts to provide quality recreational facilities for the community.
State-of-the-Art Court Design
The new 40 feet by 70 feet court, designed and installed by Cool Courts out of Spokane, boasts advanced technology to ensure a superior playing experience. Osburn community planner Jenna Arthun shared her excitement about the court’s details, highlighting the special technology used. “The tiles are VersaCourt’s Pickleball Performance, which are constructed utilizing a durable polypropylene material that is resistant to crack and fractures,” Arthun said. “The tiles offer great shock absorption, are safer than concrete and have a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years. They are also nonslip and offer maximum ball bounce.”
Funding and Installation
The project, costing over $30,000, was made possible through community grants and sponsorships, including contributions from Dave Smith Motors and the Innovia Foundation. Before the court tiles were installed, a new pad was laid by local contractors Invicta Contracting, Delvepro, LLC, and Grey Rock Industrial to ensure a stable and level surface. The new court also features state-of-the-art basketball hoops with 180-degree breakaway rims, designed to withstand the force of enthusiastic dunkers.
Community Involvement and Future Plans
Arthun stressed the importance of community respect for the new facility due to the significant investment involved. “It cost enough that we ask our community members to please treat the court and hoops with respect so it can be enjoyed for many years,” she said. Over the years, Osburn has made substantial progress in rejuvenating Lions Park, including upgrading playground equipment, adding a fitness park, and removing safety hazards.
Looking ahead, Arthun mentioned that there are more improvements on the horizon. “Although the Lions Park Project is near completion, the city will continue working to seek grant funding to pay for fencing, additional cameras, a walking path, access routes to amenities, etc.,” Arthun said. Additionally, local skate shop owner Suzi Walls is actively seeking grants to design and install a skate park at the east end of the park.
