Punta Gorda Hosts Pickleball Action: Pickleball enthusiasts descended upon the Pickleplex in Punta Gorda as part of the Sunshine State Games, where over 700 athletes showcased their skills across various disciplines.

“Well, I’ve enjoyed it. It’s always fun doing the Florida senior games and the Sunshine Games is a great part of that. The motivation for me to come here from the East coast of Florida was to qualify for the Florida Senior Games in December, so, I’m excited about that. We’ve got some good competition and I love playing,” said Toby Kaye.

Among them was Toby Kaye, an avid pickleball player hailing from the east coast of Florida. Kaye expressed his enjoyment of the event, citing the allure of the Florida Senior Games as his primary motivation for participation. Eager to qualify for the December games, Kaye embraced the competitive atmosphere and relished the opportunity to face formidable opponents on the court.

“The competition has been very high, very impressive. So we’re getting really a lot of the best athletes from around the state that are competing and happy to be part of it,” smiled Kaye.

While pickleball captured the spotlight, athletes also engaged in other sporting activities such as powerlifting, fencing, archery, and artistic swimming. The diverse range of competitions attracted top-tier athletes from across the state, adding an extra layer of excitement and intensity to the event.

Reflecting on the caliber of the competition, Kaye praised the high level of skill displayed by participants, underscoring the event’s significance as a platform for showcasing athletic skills. As winners emerge from the weekend’s contests, they earn the opportunity to represent their region at the prestigious Florida Senior Games later in the year.
