New Pickleball Courts in Westlake Village: Westlake Village is on the brink of a pickleball renaissance. The city is set to open four new courts at the community park adjacent to the Yarrow Family YMCA, with a grand opening tentatively scheduled for September 12.
During the City Council meeting on July 24, city staff detailed the operational framework for the new facility, including the role of the on-site “pickleball ambassador.” The courts will operate from sunrise to 9 p.m., aligning with park hours, and will prioritize open play. No reservations, private lessons, or clinics will be allowed.
“The focus is on open play, getting as many players on and off the court as possible, so that it becomes a fun space for everyone,” noted Caleb Mott, assistant to the city manager. Games will be played to 11 points, requiring a two-point lead to win, with no time limits. Players must vacate the court promptly if others are waiting. A traditional paddle rack system will manage court access, with a sliding “next” indicator showing the order of play.
Singles games will be prohibited if others are waiting, and groups of three must find a fourth player or cede their slot. Foursomes choosing not to split up will be accommodated. Mott highlighted the social benefits of the facility, saying,
“It’s a way to get out and meet the community, share this game that we love with everyone else.”
City staff consulted various local facilities, including the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District and the Westlake Athletic Club, to inform their approach. Steven Hoffman USA Pickleball ambassador for the Rancho Simi courts, will serve in a similar role for Westlake Village. Hoffman will assist players and promote a culture of courtesy and inclusion.
“We want the courts to be open to all, and that’s really one of the ways that the ambassador can help us, is by setting that tone on site,” Mott said. Hoffman, present during peak hours for the first three months, expressed enthusiasm about the new facility, “It’s a great game, it’s a great doubles game,” he said, emphasizing the social aspect of pickleball.
Hoffman also mentioned potential expansion plans for the Rancho Simi courts, which could lead to an influx of players at the new Westlake facility. The courts, approved last fall with a 3-2 City Council vote amid cost debates, are expected to attract pickleball enthusiasts with their extended hours and high-quality amenities. Councilmember Kelly Honig introduced a new slogan, “Westlake pickleball—it’s kind of a big dill,” reflecting the excitement surrounding the project.
