CityPickle Reappear at Dilworth Park With Pop-up Courts

CityPickle Reappear at Dilworth Park: CityPickle, the company responsible for last year’s successful pop-up pickleball courts in Center City, is set to bring the temporary courts back to Dilworth Park starting September 9. The initiative will run through October 13, offering pickleball enthusiasts and newcomers the chance to rent courts in a prime outdoor location.

We learned that Philadelphians love pickleball,” said Mary Cannon, cofounder of CityPickle. “Our court utilization was really high. It was clear that the demand for pickleball is great in Philadelphia.” This insight underscores the city’s enthusiasm for the sport.

Court Details and Booking Information

Two courts will be available daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and reservations can be made through CityPickle’s website or app. The cost for reserving a court is $40 per hour, accommodating up to eight players. Additionally, paddles can be rented for $6 per person.

This year’s pop-up will feature expanded programming, including more clinics led by coaches and open play sessions where individual players can connect with others.

Expanding the Pickleball Presence

Pickleball courts have been gaining traction in the Philadelphia area, with new facilities such as a $4 million center in Malvern and an eight-court center in South Jersey opening in 2023. CityPickle is focused on addressing the shortage of courts in urban environments.

Eventually there could be the question of oversupply in suburban markets and those markets that CityPickle is not pursuing,” Cannon noted. “I think, though, that in cities, there is a massive shortage of courts to play on.

Future Plans for Philadelphia

Beyond the temporary courts, CityPickle has seen growth, including plans for a Major League Pickleball tournament in Central Park, New York City, this September. The company has also attracted its first outside investment and reached a milestone of 100,000 customers.

Cannon and cofounder Erica Desai, both with Philadelphia ties, are planning to establish a permanent facility in the city. Initially intended for this summer, the opening has been postponed to 2025 as they continue their search for a suitable location.
