New Pickleball Facility in Hendersonville: Hendersonville’s pickleball community has jumped at the chance to use the city’s new courts at Veterans Park, even before the official ribbon-cutting ceremony. Despite ongoing updates and final touches, including the addition of benches, trash cans, and signage, the courts have quickly become a local hit.
Early Access Sparks Enthusiasm
The six newly constructed courts, located next to Mary’s Magical Place, began welcoming players last week. Hendersonville Chief of Operations Jesse Eckenroth shared the news during the Aug. 27 Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting, highlighting the immediate popularity of the facility.
Project Evolution and Cost Savings
Initially, the courts were planned for a site next to the Hendersonville Senior Citizens Center (now Elevate 50 Hendersonville) on Campus and Imperial Drives. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen had allocated $600,000 for four courts with room for expansion. However, a bid of $640,000 for just two courts, excluding essential features like fencing and lighting, led Parks Director Andy Gilley to reconsider the project.
Gilley and his team found a more budget-friendly solution, relocating the courts to the site of the city’s former inline hockey rinks. The result was six new, lighted courts built for approximately $120,000.
Facility Features and Future Plans
Eckenroth praised the new facility, stating, “It’s just a great facility,” and mentioned that while an official ribbon-cutting will be announced soon, locals have already taken full advantage of the courts. The courts are open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Online bookings and reservations are expected to be available in 2025.
