AARP Funds New Pickleball Courts in Parowan: Excitement Builds

New Pickleball Courts in Parowan: Pickleball, a dynamic sport that merges tennis, badminton, and table tennis, is rapidly gaining traction, especially among Americans aged 50 and older. The game played with a paddle and a perforated plastic ball similar to a wiffle ball, has become a favorite for its engaging and low-impact nature.

According to Pickleball Union, over half of pickleball players are aged 55 and older, with nearly one-third being 65+. Its appeal lies in its social interaction, minimal physical strain, and compact court size, making it a perfect fit for older adults.

Parowan’s Strategic Move

Recognizing the sport’s growing local appeal, Parowan Mayor Mollie Halterman secured an AARP Community Challenge grant to address the demand for new pickleball facilities.

“Through the help of AARP’s Community Challenge grant, the city of Parowan is building pickleball courts in our community. With the growing popularity of the game, the 50+ members of our community will now enjoy the courts as an active space for social and physical wellbeing.” – (Halterman)

Construction and Community Excitement

The city is currently in the early stages of constructing the new pickleball courts. Mayor Halterman noted a surge of excitement among residents, who have been eagerly visiting the construction site. The courts are expected to open to the public in the coming weeks. To celebrate, Parowan will host a pickleball tournament in October. For further details, visit the city’s website at Parowan.org.
