PKLN’s Impact on Pickleball in Delmarva: Pickleball, a sport experiencing rapid growth across various age groups, has found a vibrant community in Delmarva. Locally, PKLN, an organization based in Berlin, MD, has emerged as a key player in fostering this enthusiasm. Under the leadership of Mike O’Malley, PKLN aims to expand pickleball’s reach through charity tournaments, after-school programs, and free community clinics.
This initiative has rapidly gained traction, exemplified by the recent success of their inaugural PKLN Picklin’ for the People Community Smash event.
The PKLN Smash Event
The first PKLN Smash took place on August 1 at Worcester Prep’s outdoor tennis courts in Berlin, MD. The event drew over 30 beginners braving the 100-degree heat to learn from some of Delmarva’s top pickleball players and coaches.
The session included a semi-pro-level exhibition match with live commentary, providing attendees with a firsthand look at advanced play. Notably, local pickleballer Jacob Cook contributed by donating paddles and balls, enhancing the experience for participants.
Goals and Community Impact
Mike O’Malley emphasized the purpose behind the Smash events: to offer a judgment-free environment where people can experience pickleball without barriers. “With these Smash events, we are aiming to provide a no-pressure, judgement-free place to test out the game that has brought so many amazing people together,” O’Malley said.
The events are entirely free, with equipment and coaching provided at no charge. The commitment is to build a pickleball community that thrives on inclusivity and passion.
Looking Ahead
The success of the August event has set the stage for the next Smash, scheduled for September 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Worcester Prep. The organizers are planning even more engaging activities, including additional prizes and refreshments. O’Malley encourages everyone to join, regardless of experience. “We’re asking anyone on the fence about playing pickleball to come out on Sept. 19. You don’t need to have a paddle or any experience, and this is open to anyone of all ages,” he said. Future Smashes will continue across Delmarva, with potential fan votes determining locations and an expansion into indoor events by year-end.
