Pickleball Courts in Montross: Pickleball, the once quiet success story of Westmoreland County, might soon find a new home in Montross. The idea of converting the town’s old tennis court near the water tower into pickleball courts resurfaced during a recent Town Council meeting. Though initially shelved, the plan remains on the table as new funding possibilities are explored.
Mayor Terry Cosgrove brought up the subject during a discussion about the allocation of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, which were recently redirected to other park improvements.
“You all had voted in favor of a pickleball court a while back. At the time, the quote I had was from a vendor out of Maryland that doesn’t exist anymore. It took way too long to get there, so I engaged a local professional company to see what it would cost.” – (Cosgrove)
The new estimate for building two pickleball courts, complete with paint, nets, and fencing, came in at around $95,000. While that number seemed steep, Cosgrove suggested there might be ways to reduce the costs.
“I had engaged with a very professional local outlet. They understand that we didn’t have a lot of money and suggested we could save if we had the court paved first, then they would come in and make it right for us.” – (Cosgrove)
Despite the price tag, Cosgrove believes there is still significant interest in bringing pickleball to Montross. Many residents are eager to see the project through and are discussing new ways to raise the necessary funds.
“When I first got into this seat, there was a group of people that liked to go out in the morning and spend money at lunch. They love supporting the town. That may be an option going down the road—maybe another fundraising campaign to see if we can close the gap, if the Town can come up with half and maybe get that kind of support again.” – (Cosgrove)
For now, the fate of pickleball courts in Montross remains uncertain, but the renewed interest and community spirit suggest the idea is far from dead. The town’s leadership and its residents may yet find a way to make it happen.
