Pickleball Lines in Play at Hamden as Tennis Courts Get a Revamp

Pickleball Lines in Play at Hamden: The tennis courts on Mix Avenue, a hub for both tennis and pickleball enthusiasts, are set to undergo significant renovations next year. After reopening in July following repairs, the courts have become a popular spot for the growing pickleball community in Hamden. Joe Colello, Hamden’s public works director, noted that recent fixes included adding pickleball lines to some of the larger tennis courts, enhancing their utility for multiple sports.

A Commitment to Expansion

As part of the ongoing efforts to promote pickleball, the town has sought permission from the Hamden Board of Education to install more pickleball boundaries on six tennis courts at Hamden Middle School. Town Engineer Stephen White confirmed that these lines will be re-painted during the resurfacing of the high school courts next year. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to fostering pickleball as a recreational activity within the community.

Community Support for Pickleball

Quinnipiac University has also stepped up to support the town’s pickleball ambitions, contributing $152,000 toward the renovations. Bethany Zemba, Quinnipiac’s vice president for strategy and community relations, emphasized the university’s dedication to local infrastructure projects that meet community needs, including enhancing pickleball facilities. This collaboration highlights the university’s recognition of the sport’s growing popularity among students and local residents.

Looking Ahead

With renovations on the horizon, both the boys and girls tennis teams will soon return to their home courts, but the addition of pickleball lines ensures that these facilities serve a dual purpose. Coach Adam Raffone expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming changes, which promise to benefit both tennis and pickleball players alike.
