Pickleball Takes Over Merchant Centre in a 4-Day Tournament

Pickleball Takes Over Merchant Centre: The River City Pickleball Club is gearing up to host a regional pickleball tournament that promises to bring energy and excitement to the local pickleball scene. Spanning four days, the event is set to feature nearly 350 participants from multiple states, with organizers eager to show the sport’s vibrant, social atmosphere to the public. Taking place at the Merchant Centre Court on 2965 Bittel Road, the tournament offers free entry, inviting spectators to witness firsthand what makes pickleball a fast-growing sport across the country.

David Ryan, a founding member of the club, emphasized that this event is more than just a competition—it’s an opportunity for the community to experience the fun side of pickleball.

“Something will be going on all the time. We will have food trucks, and there will be some vendors set up to sell pickleball equipment. And if you have any questions about the club or pickleball or the rules, there will be plenty of people who love talking about pickleball to talk to.” – (ryan)

Tournament Schedule: A Breakdown of the Action

The pickleball tournament will run from Thursday through Sunday, with matches kicking off each day at 9 a.m. Thursday’s action will be focused on senior pickleball players, likely wrapping up by 2 p.m., while Friday will feature matches for men’s and women’s divisions aged 50 and over.

Friday evening will also include open play from 5-8 p.m., allowing anyone to join in on the fun. As the weekend rolls in, the event is expected to peak, with Saturday and Sunday featuring younger and more advanced players.

The intensity will ramp up as skilled competitors take the courts, offering spectators a chance to witness some high-level play. Ryan noted that with 16 games happening simultaneously, there’s always something to watch.

“We’re expecting a great turnout, especially over the weekend. With so much happening at once, it’s the perfect opportunity for people to come out and get a sense of how exciting pickleball can be.” – (ryan)

Pickleball’s Social Aspect Shines

Ryan, a 68-year-old who has been involved in pickleball for over a decade, highlighted the social nature of the sport, a key factor in its rapid growth.

“I absolutely love the game. It’s such a fun game. It’s so easy to teach and pick up. And it’s very social. While people are waiting to play they just talk about everyday life. It’s just a social game where new friends are formed. It’s just a lot of fun.” – (ryan)

He pointed out that the game’s inclusiveness is what sets it apart from other sports. It doesn’t matter how athletic someone is—pickleball is designed to be accessible for all.

Pickleball for All Ages: A Sport that Bridges Generations

Ryan was quick to mention that pickleball is truly a sport for all ages, with players ranging from teenagers to seniors in their 80s.

“The funny thing about pickleball is that your athletic ability does not equate to fun. You can go over to Owensboro Christian Church, and there’ll be some 80-year-olds in there playing.” – (ryan)

He shared a humorous anecdote about younger players underestimating older opponents, saying,

“Don’t think you can step out on the court that court and say ‘I’m gonna give this old man a lesson,’ because it ain’t gonna happen, because they’re pretty good. It keeps you young and keeps you moving, and it’s just a great sport.” – (ryan)

Looking ahead, Ryan and the River City Pickleball Club are working with the City of Owensboro to expand the sport by developing new pickleball courts at Ben Hawes Park, showing how rapidly pickleball is growing in the community.
