1st Annual Purple Door Pickleball Event Breaks Ground in Coastal Bend

Pickleball Event Breaks Ground in Coastal Bend: Hundreds of pickleball players gathered at the Al Kruse Tennis and Pickleball Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, to take part in the first-ever Purple Pickleball tournament. The event was a major success, drawing players from across the region, all with one purpose—supporting The Purple Door‘s mission to aid victims and survivors of domestic violence.

A Mission to Make an Impact

The tournament’s proceeds were directed toward expanding The Purple Door’s outreach and services in the Coastal Bend area, providing critical support to those impacted by domestic violence. The organization’s President and CEO, Frances Wilson, emphasized the importance of the community engagement created through this event.

“We have our educators out in the community to reach out to not only the community to make sure they know what we are doing but people in the community that maybe haven’t reached out to us yet that need our help,” -(Wilson)

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Spotlight

As October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the event provided a platform for survivors to share their stories. These stories are vital in raising awareness about the hidden struggles many face, especially those who remain in silence. Shelbie Ledesma, The Purple Door’s Engagement Manager, highlighted the importance of connecting directly with the community.

“We really wanted to get out in the community and meet people where they are and bring our mission of ending domestic and sexual violence in the Coastal Bend to our people,” -(Ledesma)

Looking Ahead to a Bigger Future

With the success of this inaugural event, The Purple Door is already looking to expand the tournament next year. Plans are in motion to host an even larger event, providing greater support and spreading more awareness for the cause. This event has set the tone for what is expected to become an annual staple in the community’s calendar, continuing the organization’s efforts to help those who need it most.
