Forsyth County eyes Pickleball Expansion: As pickleball continues to surge in popularity, county officials are exploring the conversion of two tennis courts at Midway Park to meet the increasing demand for this rapidly growing sport. During an Oct. 8 work session, county commissioners deliberated on a proposal to convert the tennis courts located at 5100 Post Road. The plan includes a budget of $31,500 allocated to Signature Tennis Courts for the necessary modifications.
A Multi-Use Park
Midway Park already offers a variety of recreational options, including baseball fields, trails, a picnic pavilion, and turf fields. The tennis courts in question are already marked with pickleball lines, facilitating a smooth transition for players.
According to a recent Topline Participation Report from the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, pickleball has been recognized as the fastest-growing sport in the U.S. for three consecutive years, boasting a remarkable growth rate of 51.8% from 2022 to 2023 and an astounding 223.5% increase over the past three years.
Pickleball’s Appeal
For those unfamiliar with the game, pickleball is played with paddles, where pickleball players hit a ball over a net, drawing similarities to tennis and badminton. It has gained immense popularity among seniors, who appreciate its numerous mental and physical health benefits, as highlighted by the AARP.
County Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills shared her observations from a recent evening stroll, noting the vibrant activity at Forsyth County’s pickleball courts.
“It was packed,” Jones Mills stated, emphasizing the growing interest in the sport.
Balancing Needs
While commissioners expressed enthusiasm about the proposed conversion, some raised concerns about ensuring sufficient opportunities for tennis players in the area. According to the county, tennis courts remain accessible in neighboring communities, ensuring that both sports can coexist.
