Pickleball Arrives at TSV Weyhe-Lahausen, A New Pickleball Spot for Fun and Fitness

Pickleball Arrives at TSV Weyhe-Lahausen: In a significant move to embrace one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, TSV Weyhe-Lahausen has officially introduced pickleball to its athletic offerings. The sport, which combines elements of tennis, table tennis, and badminton, has quickly gained popularity in the United States and is now making waves in Weyhe. The tennis division of the club opened its pickleball court at the Central Sports Facility (ZSA) in mid-August, having initially postponed court markings due to unfavorable weather conditions.

A Sport for Everyone

Pickleball is designed to be accessible for players of all ages and skill levels. The paddle used in the game, featuring a relatively short handle, resembles that of padel tennis, while the ball itself is a perforated, hollow plastic sphere. With the outdoor season now concluded, the club provided interested individuals the opportunity to reserve court time via its booking portal before the weather turned.

The introduction of pickleball at TSV Weyhe-Lahausen stemmed from inspiration gained from a neighboring club in Syke, which has been offering indoor pickleball.

Fortunately, the Central Sports Facility had available capacity, and with approval from the municipality of Weyhe, the tennis division was able to move forward with their plans. A new net, court markings, and appropriate paddles were acquired thanks to funding from the local sports association. As noted by tennis division leaders Marion Schumacher and Hannelore Moldehnke, TSV is now the first club in Weyhe to feature this exciting sport.

Popularity Across the Ocean

In the United States, pickleball has already surpassed its status as a mere trend; it has become a cultural phenomenon. “There are suitable playing courts in numerous parks.” report Marion Schumacher and Hannelore Moldehnke, highlighting the sport’s widespread appeal.

The beauty of pickleball, according to Claudia Thein-Becker, lies in its simplicity: “You can simply get started.” Unlike traditional tennis, the smaller pickleball court size means players engage in less running, and the serve must be executed from below, requiring the ball to bounce once before play.

The sport’s appeal spans all generations, which was evident during the club’s summer festival on September 4, where attendees had the chance to try their hand at pickleball. Even a four-year-old participant managed to keep the ball in the air, showing the sport’s accessibility.

Future Possibilities

Looking ahead, there are plans to offer indoor pickleball during the off-season, either in collaboration with the Syker club or through coordination with the municipality at the local multipurpose hall. Encouragingly, discussions with the Syker club have fostered a spirit of cooperation rather than competition.

“It has been well received so far. The demand is there.” said Marion Schumacher regarding the enthusiastic response to the new sport. Notably, some older women from the tennis division, who face joint issues, have already shown interest in this gentler alternative to tennis.

Next year, TSV Weyhe-Lahausen aims to fully launch pickleball, potentially hiring a coach and forming a team, although league play is still in its infancy in Germany. The existing pickleball court has room for expansion, presenting a promising opportunity for growth.

The rules of pickleball are straightforward and can be reviewed at the Central Sports Facility pickleball court. For instance, players are not permitted to hit the ball out of the air within the “Kitchen,” the area near the net.

The outdoor pickleball season is anticipated to resume in spring 2025, coinciding with the start of the tennis season. However, there’s potential for earlier engagement with the sport as soon as conditions permit, as unlike tennis, there’s no need to wait for the court to be prepped.
