Lewistown Pickleball Courts Score Major Upgrades: As the sun rises over Symmes Park in Lewistown, those passing by can’t help but notice the buzz surrounding the pickleball courts. In just their second year, these courts have undergone significant enhancements that elevate the experience for both players and spectators alike.
Community Efforts Drive Transformation
In 2023, a dedicated group of local players rallied to convert the underutilized tennis courts into a vibrant pickleball haven. This transformation involved resurfacing and repainting the courts, along with new fencing to create a more inviting environment. The momentum continued into 2024, as players raised additional funds to develop a gravel rest area for spectators. This new space, separated from the courts by a six-foot fence, includes benches for onlookers or anyone in need of a breather after an intense match. The gravel area also accommodates a storage shed, ensuring that supplies, including the nets now dividing each of the six courts, are safely stored during winter.
Karen Sweeney, a passionate advocate for the sport, expressed her gratitude for the community’s support in these improvements.
“We’ve raised over $96,000, not including in-kind donations,” Sweeney stated. “We really appreciate all the support the community has provided.”
Establishing a Sustainable Future
The Lewistown pickleball group has taken significant steps to ensure the longevity of the courts by establishing an endowment at the Central Montana Foundation. This partnership with the City will provide the necessary funding for maintenance and future upgrades.
For Sweeney, the growth of pickleball in Lewistown has been a source of pride.
“We have up to five courts going at a time in the mornings, and at night, you see all types of people out here playing — younger couples, kids, young women’s groups,” she said. “It’s really neat to see.”
Seasonal Changes Ahead
As winter approaches, the outdoor pickleball courts are set to close for the season. However, the enthusiasm for the sport remains high, as players will still have the opportunity to compete at the Lewistown Civic Center gym. Reserved courts will be available weekday mornings and most afternoons. Should unseasonably warm weather occur, the group is open to collaborating with the City Parks and Recreation to reopen the outdoor courts temporarily.
“We plan to close for the season soon,” Sweeney confirmed. “We’ll take down the nets and lock the gate, but we would potentially work with the City Parks and Recreation to re-open for warmer weather.”
