Bainbridge Island Opens New Pickleball Complex: Bainbridge Island is set to enhance its recreational offerings with the introduction of a new pickleball complex at Strawberry Hill Park. Following extensive discussions and planning, the Bainbridge Island Pickleball Club (BIPC) has proposed a design that includes 11 covered and lit courts, making it the largest public pickleball facility in Kitsap County. This initiative aims to meet the growing demand for indoor and evening play options within the local pickleball community.
New Pickleball Courts on Bainbridge Island
The proposal, presented by Melissa Bang-Knudsen of the Bainbridge Island Pickleball Club during the park district board meeting on October 17, marks a significant step forward for pickleball players on the island. The newly acquired undeveloped property adjacent to Strawberry Hill Park will support the complex, according to Erin Johnston, a representative from the parks district.
The addition of these courts is particularly timely as the island’s pickleball community has long sought facilities that accommodate play during inclement weather and outside of daylight hours.
Currently, Bainbridge Island boasts 21 outdoor pickleball courts, but only two are indoors, leading to a shortage of suitable playing conditions, especially during winter months or rainy days. The planned complex at Strawberry Hill Park is designed to address these challenges, allowing players to enjoy the sport year-round.
Community Engagement and Decision-Making
Community involvement has played a critical role in the development of the new pickleball courts. The Bainbridge Island Pickleball Club worked closely with the park district staff, gathering input from local players and stakeholders. These comments and questions received during the initial meetings will guide the next steps in the project’s exploration, ensuring that the needs of the community are prioritized.
The decision to locate the new courts at Strawberry Hill was not without its challenges. Earlier proposals considered Battle Point Park, which is home to the largest outdoor pickleball area on the island, the Founder’s Courts.
However, concerns about light pollution affecting the nearby Edwin E. Ritchie Observatory and the park’s stormwater requirements led to the decision to focus on Strawberry Hill Park instead. “Strawberry Hill Park is centrally located and is more of an open slate.” said Parks Commissioner Ken DeWitt, highlighting the advantages of the new site.
In June, the Bainbridge Island Pickleball Club held a vote among its members to choose between Strawberry Hill and Battle Point, resulting in a narrow decision with 36 votes for Strawberry and 34 for Battle Point. This close outcome shows the importance of community input in shaping recreational facilities on the island.
Future of Pickleball on Bainbridge Island
The establishment of the new pickleball complex is more than just a facility; it represents a significant milestone for the Bainbridge Island pickleball community. With the new courts, players will have greater access to quality playing conditions, fostering an environment that encourages participation from fans of all ages and skill levels. This facility is expected to not only benefit local players but also attract tournaments and events, further promoting the sport on Bainbridge Island.
As construction plans move forward, the Bainbridge Island Pickleball Club and park district staff will continue to collaborate, ensuring that all logistical aspects are addressed and that the complex meets the community’s needs. The growing popularity of pickleball on the island shows a vibrant community dedicated to enhancing its recreational opportunities.
News in Brief: Bainbridge Island Opens New Pickleball Complex
The proposed pickleball complex at Strawberry Hill Park is a significant advancement for Bainbridge Island’s sports infrastructure. It reflects the community’s commitment to expanding recreational facilities and providing an inclusive space for all pickleball players. As the project develops, community members are encouraged to stay engaged and share their thoughts.
