Pickleball Wave Sweeps Hawaii: Pickleball, an American sport, surged in popularity in Hawaii after the COVID-19 pandemic, as residents embraced it as a socially distanced activity. Known locally as “pukaball” the sport allowed people to gather and play in garages, maintaining safe distances while still engaging in friendly competition. This newfound enthusiasm has now gained significant momentum with the opening of a massive 45-court facility at the Hawaii Convention Center, the largest of its kind in the state, promising to attract an even wider audience and solidify the sport’s presence in Hawaii.
Hawaii’s Pickleball Infrastructure and Growth
With this latest addition, Hawaii now boasts over 350 pickleball courts across more than 100 locations. Yet, despite these numbers, Hawaii ranks 44th in the U.S. for total pickleball courts, highlighting room for further expansion to meet the growing interest.
Since the sport’s invention in 1965, its reach has slowly extended into the island state, spurred on by some of its inventors who introduced it to Hawaii. By 2017, more than 500 active players were involved, and participation has increased over the last seven years, showing a substantial increase in demand for pickleball facilities.
Launch of the Sports Courts Program at the Convention Center
Following the installation of 45 courts, the Hawaii Convention Center recently launched its latest sports courts program. Running from November 1 through Sunday, November 3, the program introduced indoor pickleball matches, giving players a new venue and experience.
This initiative marks a new chapter in Hawaii’s commitment to supporting pickleball and providing players with high-quality playing spaces.
Aloha Pickleball Games and Festival
The Aloha Pickleball Games and Festival, organized by Pop Up Pickleball, celebrated this milestone by hosting an amateur event at the convention center.
Open to players of all ages and skill levels, the festival added excitement to the launch of the new courts, uniting the local pickleball community in a show of passion and sportsmanship.
This event, part of the sport’s growing presence, reflects the immense enthusiasm surrounding pickleball in Hawaii, positioning the state as a dynamic hub for the sport’s ongoing evolution.
