Tucker’s Pickleball Proposal: The city of Tucker is exploring the idea of introducing pickleball courts to the community. On Thursday evening, local officials hosted a meeting to discuss the proposed plan of constructing 12 new pickleball courts at the recreation center.
The proposal, which comes with an estimated price tag of nearly $2.9 million, involves placing the courts behind the center, near a residential neighborhood. The location’s proximity to homes has sparked concerns from residents, many of whom worry about the potential impact on their daily lives.
Resident Concerns Over Noise and Traffic
A significant number of residents turned out to voice their concerns about the proposed pickleball courts. Key worries centered around the noise, light pollution, and increased traffic that could accompany the new pickleball facility. One homeowner expressed how the noise could negatively affect their health and well-being, saying, “The noise factor would be upsetting to my health and well-being.”
Clementine Kornder, a local resident, voiced her opposition, emphasizing the disruption that could arise from the project. “More noise behind these neighbors sounds kind of horrendous,” she remarked. Kornder also expressed dissatisfaction with how the city had handled community involvement in the decision-making process, stating, “They didn’t actually ask the neighborhood what they would like to do with this area.”
Support and Suggestions for Modifications
Despite the opposition, there are also residents who support the addition of the courts. Matt Robbins, who sees the value of the project, acknowledged the significant cost but encouraged the city to find ways to address the concerns raised. “Oh yeah, it’s a lot of money,” Robbins commented. “We need to rethink that.” However, Robbins also suggested that the city could manage noise and light issues effectively, stating, “We will look at means to modify the noise. Lights, we can control that by shutting the day off at 8 or 7:30 or whatever else.”
A Push for Pickleball in Tucker
Jenny Fain, a strong supporter of the sport, sees the new courts as a positive step forward for the city. “Absolutely for it,” Fain said. “It’s great exercise and great fun for the community.” She views the addition of the courts as an opportunity to bring people together and promote physical activity.
City’s Response and Next Steps
While the mayor and the developer, Root Studio, declined to comment on camera, the mayor assured residents that the project is not yet finalized. The city is still evaluating the overall cost and impact of the proposed pickleball courts. A spokesperson for the city indicated that there is currently no timeline set for the development of the new facility.
